Journal of voyage of brig Wellingsley from Boston to San Francisco : ms., 1849 Sept. 3-1850 May

Daily accounts of a voyage from Boston, Mass., to San Francisco, Calif., via Cape Horn, by an unnamed narrator aboard the brig Wellingsley. Written as letters to his wife, Gussy, these entries describe the weather, sailing conditions, various locations, and activities aboard the ship. He also refers to her father, who is aboard (as captain of the brig?), and writes often of how he misses her and their daughter, Anna. Throughout the volumes (in no particular order) are dated illustrations and sketches in pencil of the coast of Coquimbo (Chile), California, Talcahuano, LeMaire's Straits, Cape San Diego, Cape Horn, and Tierra del Fuego. Also, there are three illustrations of the brig as seen off Cape Horn, north of the equator, and entering the harbor of San Francisco. Although the last journal entries note that harsh weather conditions prevent the Wellingsley from reaching its destination, drawings of San Francisco and the coast of Calif. dated May 1850 imply that the brig eventually does arrive.
